I don't know how they do it in Texas because I just moved here. In NJ, there was always the legal whatcha-ma-call-it...citation, code, statute....statute...try looking for a bunch of numbers seperated by colons. If you can find the statute number, you should be able to find the actual law on the Internet. That should tell you what type of infraction it is (misdemeanor, feloney, class 1, 2, 3, etc.) and then you should be able to find a reference that'll tell you at least what the maximum fine can be.

Alot of work...but trust me, it pays to go into court knowing this type of information ahead of time.
