Hey, a good setup costs money and i dont have any. Wait until I can design my own. In any case, I know how to get a good estimation on the PAR watts of any type of light. Find someone else that can do that please. There is calculus involved..... What does that mean? I can match the sun's readiation potential and COLOR. I can determine the right amount of different colored lights to match the 5500K temperature of sunlight. See the 5500K MH bulbs dont have the spectral distribution of the sun. If you mix say another 6000K bulb with it, it boosts the blue light but by how much and what else does it boost and by how much. I CAN DO THAT BUDDY. So leave me alone. I'm poor at the moment.

Hmm... I've never heard of the sun's "readiation??" Tell me more, buddy! Haha, sorry I had to....

Congrats on whatever degree you have, but calculus and biology (of plants) are two completely different things. Sure you may be able to get the maximum from a light set-up using your calculus knowledge, but I'm sure there are people who are biology geniuses and know marijuana's structure, what to do to it, what not to do to it, what to feed and when to feed it. Im sure there a people so skilled in plant biology that growing marijuana for them is easier than easy. Some people can make marijuana dance to any tune they're singing!! (Jdog, Zandor, LIP, dutchy to name a few...) Some people don't even need degrees to do that! Some people just have enough hands on experience that they have gained way more knowledge than they could have gotten reading books on the subject (although a double dose of hands on experience and literature on the subject would be super as well!)

Im DEFINITELY not (only on my 1st "real" grow) one of those people, and I'm going to take a leap here and say you aren't either. Degrees aren't the only way of obtaining knowledge, and a degree does not make you better than anyone.

All that light stuff youre doing with calculus doesn't really help anyway. Why not exceed the sun's potential? (Now you COULD use your calculus knowledge to EXCEED the sun's potential and not just match it...THAT would be useful!) I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure if you bought the right lights and had the right set up indoors, you can get better results from the sun. So why match it? Im glad you can figure out how to do it, it's nice seeing some more mathematical minded people on the boards (Im going to be a high school geometry and calculus teacher) but I don't think it's necessary to "brag" about it.

I will admit, SpiritLevel took a cheap little shot, but a simple "shove it up your arse" would have done the trick instead of bragging about your calculus skills :thumbsup:

Glad to know there are smart stoners out there eager to apply their knowledge to the art of marijuana cultivation. I also appreciate your enthusiasm for your newfound engineering knowledge; I am heading off to engineering school in about a month from now, and I am as excited about what I have yet to learn as I am proud of what I already know.

But you don't need to brag. Anyone can talk about what they can do, or know how to do, but where I come from, the saying goes, "put up or shut up".

When you have the money to integrate your engineering knowledge into your grow setup, -then- tell us about how cool you are. At least post up some formulas and calculations for the light output of various bulbs. Seriously-- I'm actually interested in how color relates to wattage relates to lumens, and how you can do these calculations without a spectroscope on hand. Handwritten and scanned, if possible.

Until then, while I'm proud of you for doing something with your life, keep your cool new skillz on the DL.

What is the trick? That wasn't a cheap shot. Actually, come to think of it, how can you admit on my behalf that it was a cheap shot? I only wanted to see if all that new intelligence was doing its job, a yes or no or dissertation would have sufficed.

Shove it up your arse isn't an answer! That is what dumb asses say when they have no words of wisdom left. Pretty soon after that, things come to where there are corpses lying in pools of blood in the street.

Paulinator's intelligence, I guess, is within his knowledge, and not necessarily in what I read in posts on here. If I want to gain an insight into that knowledge, or any knowledge, then I probe. Probing seldom renders intelligence useless since the objective is purely to gain knowledge. The more intelligent the source of the knowledge is the easier it is to gain knowledge from that source. This is because the highly intelligent knowledgable person knows how to teach what they know from many perspectives, not just the narrow view that most of us have. Only through constant exchange of questions and answers do individuals gain texture, depth and over-standing of a subject. How I probe is upto me. How someone answers is up to them. Paulinator's intelligence has given him the ability to defend what he knows with what he knows and I dare say that what he knows exceeds the confinements of a response like 'shove it up you arse'.

In the information exchange then, the less ordinary the questions the greater chance of widening ones' perspective. This helps both parties in my view. The more challenging the question, once the answer is found, the better off we all are (I AM).

Calculus is something I am familiar with since I too have studied various subjects here and there. PAR watts and sun radiation potentials on the other hand are fairly new to me but are things that I can go away, look into and learn from, especially if someone has proven that I can increase my yeild by using a comination of different light sources.

If the answer I got was shove it anywhere, that would have been a demonstration of the level of mentality I was dealing with. Then I would have started taking cheap shots instead of using all this costly ammo.

I hope to see a thread or two that deal with these scientific subjects, maybe paulinator is the one to do it once he get his lab sorted. IMHO if you REALLY can make a difference in the world then BRAG away, but only after making that bit of difference.

My roomate has been growin and also has a botany degree. About the light calculations, you need to make a program using matlab because it would take lots of skill to do it by hand. So I know both sides of the story. My roomate has taken soil samples and analyzed it using a GCMS(gas chromatograph/mass spec).
