Yer in Cali man, far as i know you can grow any amount as long as its not broken out into measures. Some counties have plant limits and such but aside from that the actual harvest amount means nothing.

There are only a few other states that even allow medical use, and for most states its still illegal, and cultivation will get you a minimum sentence in some states.

So ya paranoid in Cali maybe, but not paranoid for other states.
