Okay if you're super super cheap you can build a flood and drain system for like nothing.

You need a tray, a pond pump, a timer, an air stone with air pump,a reservoir, some tubing, and a drill.

For a medium you are going to want Hydroton. For plant support you will be growing in rockwool blocks.

I'm trying to upload a diagram.

The trick is to adjust the drain hole size and the pump flow so it fills faster than it drains. Time how long it takes to wet the medium, then set the timer that the pump is plugged into for that time.

When the pump turns off, it will slowly drain out the hole, which if you're going super cheap, you'll have to check daily to ensure it isn't clogged.

I'm not getting into a big discussion of hydro here because I'm not an expert and anyway it's all on the internet if you look it up.

I built this setup for like $40 us, plus the cost of the medium, lights, and ferts.

It works well but is really bare bones.

Okay, diagram to come when my pice of crap camera decides to work again.
