She was born the oldest in her extended family, and I was born the youngest, in a small family. My elders were my Brother and Sister, and, some of the time, when I opened my mouth, I'd get my way. She, on the other hand, opened her mouth to her parents and would get punished for it.

You frame things well. Beach. It seems that she is either going thru an introspective time, or needs some major inner healing, becomes much like a program that's constantly running in the background. It boots up on start up. How long has she been like this? She could be evaluating life, which should not go on for an extended time.

She is most likely depressed. An individual can't laugh, and others can't laugh with you. This is fairly easily remedied. Take her to Dr. help her walk out of it. You could be very surprised. It would be a good investment anyway. She would love you for It and would never forget it. It would be a very loving act.
