Hahaha! You know the truth! LOL...Most people seem to think China is so "exotic", but they destroyed most the exotic-looking buildings and such a long time ago...LOL. That Wal-Mart picture sums it up quite nice, Fengzi...:smokin:

I usually eat at home because my girlfriend cooks for me...very good and very cheap...And you can, of course, find some really tasty and inexpensive restaurants everywhere. I don't know how you could stand living in Shanghai though...I detest Beijing and Shanghai...I live further North in a less global city.

I used to live in Binzhou, Shandong...do a google search on that one...LOL :stoned:

If you come back for a visit, well have to meet up for a little :glugglug:.

    God Bless Texas! :stoned:
Yeah, all I could get was hash too. We used to get it from the Xinjiangren that would hang out on the riverfront offering to change money. Never good quality but it did the trick.

I loved living in Shanghai but that was 10 years ago. It's such a totally different place now. My wife and I had a little tiny, about 30m square, apartment in the Nothern part of the city. I'm sure I was the only Westerner in the entire neighborhood and most folks seemed to consider me some exotic pet of my wife's. We also had to pay off the local cop with a carton of cigarettes every few weeks since, as a foriegner, I wasn't really supposed to be living there. Ah...the good ol' days.

We never ate at MCD's or KFC either. My wife hated the food there and it was so much cheaper to just get what we needed at the outdoor market behind our appartment building. If we did eat out it was in one of the local places. We had a great Sichuan place right around the corner and there were lots of little hole in the wall la mien places close by.

So what are you doing in China anyway? I first went to study, then wound up teaching English, and then just bummed around for a while. Now I go back once a year or so to visit the in-laws or for business (my company has an office in Shanghai).

I actually might be heading to Beijing in August. My wife has to go for business and I'm thinking of tagging along. If so, I'll drop you a line.

That's cool Mr. Fengzi--- 是疯子的疯子吗? (I am guessing you can see the characters on your computer?)

Yeah, the old xinjiangren are still around pushing their powdery hash, but some other nationalities are bringing in what seems to be afghan and nepalese black, but I am only going by a rough guide I found on the internet as to descriptions. Either way, its definitely better than the powder stuff.

A carton of cigarettes? LOL. :stoned: I haven't had to bribe any police yet for my living arrangements, but I have bribed a few people to extend my visa. I would have like to seen what Shanghai was like ten years ago. Would definitely make for an interesting comparison. Must be completely different by now...Even the city I am living in (think Manchuria) is developing so quickly its amazing, but we still have an extremely small foreign population compared to Beijing and Shanghai.

I studied a little Chinese in university and decided I wanted to come out and do a three month gig in a small town to practice my Chinese and get a feel for the culture, but a couple weeks after I got here (or a couple hours I forget exactly) I decided that a minimum of two years would be in order. Now I am thinking a couple more...:smokin:

So...now I am just teaching a couple days a week and studying when I am not on cannabis.com.

If you come up to Beijing, definitely drop me a line. I usually go down once every couple months anyway. :smokin:

dui, 是疯子的疯子. My Chinese name is Feng Mai Ke but a different feng(2nd tone, sorry, don't have Chinese input on this computer). Anyhow, I kept mispronouncing it, using the 1st tone. It actually kind of fit, so my Chinese friends just started calling me 疯子 and it stuck.

Your story is pretty simlilar to mine. I studied Chinese here in the U.S. and then decided to do a summer program of intense language study at Fudan University in Shanghai. After that summer I had to come back to the states for 6months to finish my last semester and get my B.S., but after graduating went back to Shanghai to continue my language studies.

During my first summer at Fudan I met a lovely, and very young(actually the youngest in Fudan's history), professor. I was a bit older than most of my peers, she was younger than all of her's, and we started spending more and more time together outside of class. Well, one thing led to another and now I have Chinese in-laws to deal with. We had originally planned to stay in China, since she had no desire to come to the U.S., but one thing led to another and after a year or so ended up back here in California . The company my wife works for now would love to re-locate her to Beijing though, so we are really considering going back for at least several years. It would be a great experience for our daughter and with my wife's salary we could live like royalty in China.

Oh well..I rambling now. Better get back to work

You are 疯子 and my Chinese name is 叉子! LOL...

I suppose I will have Chinese in-laws one day too...at least at the rate I am going now. If you come to Beijing let me know, like I said I go down every couple months for a break from good old Liaoning. :smokin:

Do you mind if I ask what you are doing in San Francisco? Are you using Chinese in your work now? Are you fluent? I am kind of hoping that if I learn Chinese very well that I will be able to go back home one day and get a job with an American company that will let me live in China so I TOO can live like royalty!
