CLay pots
HI Stinky
I always (most of the time) fill the bottom 1/2 inch of my pots with perlite (I use a sheet of newspaper to keep the perlite from falling through the drainage holes)... Clay pellet are probably a good idea too..
The main reason I like doing this..
When water drains from the bottom of my containers , I let the pots sit in the water/overflow... sometimes this is up to 1 inch of water... having perlite or clay rocks at the bottom of your container prevent roots from drownig or soil on the bottom getting soggy and lacking adequate O2..
