    Flouresent/HPS combo

I have a sweet closet set up with a 5 nice flouresent lights mounted..my plant s are at the stage (3 weeks) to where they could use a HPS bulb. I have one HPS 400W with reflector on the way (2weeks) so in the mean time until it gets here I have them under the floro's. When my HPS comes in should I ditch the Flouro's or can use run both at the same time for even better results

    Flouresent/HPS combo

    HI!

run both at the same time unless the FLUORESCENTS will inhibit your ability to get the HPS as close as possible...

Fluorescent SIDE LIGHTING will dramaticly increase your yield!

Just my opinion here and this should not be taken as fact:

I have grown under flouro and, well every kind of light i can think of. I do not use flouros except for cloning, because the ratio of power and heat to light output is horrible. Ya, i know it doesn't seem like they produce much heat because the bulbs are so big and it is spread out but they do. Info on this is all over the place, just look up light efficency and read on.

Finish this grow with the flouros and the HPS as soon as you can get it in there. Then just use the HPS and SCROG the area under just that light, no side lighting, your yield will increase most likely by double. Just give it a try, everyone i know that has SCROGged under a HID has never gone back. Also note that SCROG was originally developped to take advantage of Flouros, it is just much much COOLER under a big HID.

It's okay to use both if you can keep the heat under control. I flower with a 400 watt HPS plus eight 30-watt warm CFLs, and it works great. The CFLs definitely do add to the heat, but I have good ventilation, so it's not really an issue. As long as you can keep the heat under control, pack as much light on the plants as you can.

    Mr.Bachelor...

MORE light (properly placed) = more bud
I say in the friendliest voice possible... : )

    i disagree with you 100%

    A couple examples...

CFL lighting can produce MORE weight that HID lights 250 watts and under without the heat issues of HID's.. especially in enclosed areas and even more noticably in grows without circulation. CFLS can be less than 1/8 inch away from foilage without burning the plant.

I saw a plant that yielded 3.5 POUNDS indoors.. It had a 1000 watt HPS for over head lighting and 7- 200 watt ENVIROLIGHTS for side lighting...
This grower had to actually cut off some branches because the plant out grew his cabnet... There are others (on these boards) who can verify this amazing plant. Without side lighting, this plant would not have even yielded 16 ounces (my opinion of course)

There are also pictures (in the BASIC GROWING FORUM) of a plant that yielded 3 ounces with a 17 gram main cola that was grown using cfl lighting.. : )
