Saudi Arabia Offers Scholarships To US-Bound Aviation Students
Wed, 21 Jun '06
Timing Is Everything...
Given some still-simmering resentments in this country over the fact Saudi Arabia was home to nearly all the 9/11 hijackers... is this the best time for that country to be offering cash scholarships for its students to train for aviation careers in the US?
Well, regardless, it is... as Aero-News has learned the Ministry of Higher Education and the General Authority of Civil Aviation are offering scholarships to Saudi students to study various civil aviation majors in several countries, including the United States.
Both bachelorā??s and post-graduate study programs are available under the program... and applicants have until July 12 to submit their applications online.
The Middle East daily Arab News reports the scholarships are available in majors such as communications, electrical and computer engineering, computer science, systems analysis, air traffic control, flight safety, and other majors related to the airline industry.
Most of the usual scholarship requirements apply -- high GPA's are preferred, of course, as is a proficiency in science, administrative and commercial sciences. Post-grad applicants must have acquired their bachelor degrees in the past three-years, and aeromedical students must also have scored above a 70 percent in tests of their abilities.
All applicants are also required to demonstrate proficiency in knowledge of the Koran, according to Arab News.
Forms to apply are available at the FMI link below. Nominations to the program will be announced July 31, with interviews in August and final scholarship winners announced on September 2.

Saudis To Get U.S. Aviation Scholarships
The United Sates and Saudi Arabia reached an agreement last year that will allow thousands of Saudi students to enroll in American universities and now that Islamic country is promoting scholarships to study civil aviation in America.
This is of tremendous concern since 15 of the 19 September 11 hijackers were Saudi nationals who studied aviation in the U.S. Perhaps when President George W. Bush and King Abdullah agreed to the deal in 2005, the king failed to mention that aviation scholarships would eventually be offered as part of the deal.
The leaders agreed that the new, large-scale academic program would admit 6,000 Saudis to American universities this year after just 1,442 were granted visas to study in the U.S. in 2004. The idea, apparently, is to improve relations between the two nations.
But how can Americans help but question the Saudi Ministry of Educationā??s recent announcement that it is offering scholarships to Saudi men and women to study civil aviation in the United States? The scholarships are available in majors such as communications, electrical and computer engineering, computer science, systems analysis, air traffic control, flight safety, and other majors related to the airline transport industry.
It doesnā??t help that Saudiā??s Ministry of Education requires, as part of childrenā??s official curriculum, hateful anti-American textbooks that say Jews and Christians are the enemy and that God will grant victory to Muslims. Sample chapters of these appalling books were obtained from a public broadcast station.
Hopefully the United States Department of State, which issues visas to foreign students, will closely monitor the new class of Saudi aviation graduates. Debbie Schlussel has a better idea, though. She says itā??s about time that we restrict aviation training in the U.S. to nationals of non-terrorist-linked nations. She adds that the Saudis should be ashamed of their U.S.-aviation-educated countrymen who murdered nearly 3,000 Americans.Breukelen advocaat Reviewed by Breukelen advocaat on . So...you're against all Saudi's getting educated, here in the US, in aviation technology? I guess if they're Saudi and an "air traffic controller" they might direct unsuspecting flights into buildings or something? So progressive...
