If you'll read a little more closely, 3rd Eye, he didn't call every Canadian stupid. His opinion seemed to be considerably more focused on just one of you.

3rd Eye's claims don't diminish my affection or respect for Canadians in general. They're largely a peace-loving, tolerant group of people. He's not yet old enough to know how someone the age of your parents feels about the idea of sending youngsters with their lives in front of them to a war that had no justification in the first place. Here I'm speaking of Iraq. If we go to war with Iran or North Korea sometime in the future, those'll be more justified actions, but no one with any sense wants to see young people pulled away from their lives and sent into a place where they could be killed or wounded.

I admire people like you, Peach Optimo, who would go proudly and fight for your country and family. If I were under the age limit, I'd likely do the same thing. I'd be frightened to death, but I'd do it. I'm far more protective of my 20-year-old son and his future than I am about my own. At 44, I've at least had opportunities to live my life, but he has only barely begun his.

An Open Letter to Store Owners & Managers Nationwide

Dear Sir or Madam:

This has been a long year for the citizens of Iraq and for our troops in the armed forces. Headlines, news-stories, and politicians have portrayed the situation in Iraq as violent, terror-ridden, and bloody. All of that is true: such is the nature of war; but also, such is the nature of a burgeoning democracy. Indeed, our own Founding was far from bloodless.


Nevertheless, there has been another story in Iraq that has unfolded over the past year, despite the violence, despite the terrorism â?? it is the story of a brave people standing up for themselves, with our help, to build a democracy â?? the first Arab democracy in the Middle East. While some have discounted this story, it is a fact. In January â?? and again in October â?? millions of Iraqis braved threats of attack from terrorists and stood up on behalf of democracy, casting their votes in a process that will culminate in a third election next week, Dec. 15th.

If there has been one, strong signal and image of those brave efforts, it has been the purple, ink stain on every voting Iraqiâ??s finger â?? proving they voted. Those ink stained fingers have been raised with pride in January and October; and we want them raised with pride again next week, as they stand up for freedom and elections in their new democracy.

Abraham Lincoln said of our Declaration of Independence that it contained â??an abstract truth, applicable to all men and all times, and so to embalm it there, that today, and in all coming days, it shall be a rebuke and a stumbling-block to the very harbingers of re-appearing tyranny and oppression.â?� The Iraqis are voting for candidates in their parliament, under their new constitution â?? as they, too, take this large step toward equality, life, liberty, and a pursuit of happiness impossible for them over the past generation, impossible for them even three years ago.

With our troops, with our allies, and with the brave Iraqis, we look forward to a new birth of freedom in Iraq; and want to do what we can to show our soldiers, our allies, and â?? most importantly â?? the Iraqis, that we stand with them as they stand for themselves.

Starting on Monday, December 12th, I â?? and tens of thousands of others across America â?? will be marking my right index finger with purple ink to show those in Iraq we support them. Based on suggestions from listeners on my nationally syndicated radio show, I â?? and we â?? are asking you (to the degree physically feasible) to make available an ink pad or marker at your check-out counters for your customers, to mark their fingers with ink as they leave your store.

Just as I believe in a politics of liberty, I also believe in an economy based on free market principles. Making an ink pad available for your customers who would like to show their support for those principles in your stores through December 15th is what I am asking, in support of that politics and that economy. You may wish to alert your local media of your doing this, for added publicity of the cause outlined above, and your support of it.

Let us all look forward to a day when all men, women, and children can live in freedom. Until then, let us do what we can for those that we can.

Rainbow... i herd that there was a scermish, and a bunch of them (US soldiers) went to that fight. Left them thier by them selves. I'm not going to go as far as to say that some here are ignorant, but most are unaware of many things that are happening in this world.
People that live in America and Canada don't realize how lucky they are to be able to live in a place as such. Sometimes it just takes one visit to any one of the middle eastern, mediteranean, and west asian countries to witness first hand how POPULATIONS of people live day to day. I am Lebanese and have my ENTIRE family living in Lebanon. People live in slums. they work ther asses of only to earn a paycheck that covers 20% of their basic expenses. What lies ahead for people living in these parts of the world?
its not ALL politics. You have to understand that there are innocent civilians that deserve to live the way the rest of us do.
If the Bush Administration has the passion to "begin" efforts to bring prosperity to those regions, i'm all for it. Going into iraq is necessary if this is every going to happen. I'm not saying that invading Iraq is going to fix the world, but its an initiative to stop islamic extremists and terror groups.
You have to understand that any and all forms of government in that area is horribly corrupt and without the help of the US, that area of the world will continue downhill.
I know my post will get some nasty reponses and i welcome them.

Believe it or not most other Americans believe that way too. These brave men and women are not forced to fight they volunteer. I was in the military and my ex-husband and father of my daughter has been in for 17 years. Iâ??ve traveled the Middle East and I know exactly what you are talking about. The only way Iraqis are going to loose support of the American people is if they loose the will to fight and die for their own freedom.

I understand where you're coming from, iwantFUEGO. Really, I do. And I have travelled and lived in the Middle East and, unlike many Americans, I immersed myself in the culture around me, to the extent that I didn't even allow English to be spoken in my home.

That said, I'm not so sure that invading Iraq has in any way helped suppress terrorism. Is there less terrorism now than there was before we invaded? If anything, it seems to be on the rise. After all, the extremists now have *another* reason to hate us - we're deeply embedded in yet another area they consider "theirs".

But it's too late to change the past, and it would be, IMHO, immoral to leave Iraq now, whether it was a mistake to invade originally or not. If we leave before Iraq has a stable government capable of providing its own security, then we'll have done more harm than good, to our own interests and especially to the people in Iraq. If we leave too soon, we'll have done nothing but create Iran II.

I did see some reports that the ultimate financial cost of invading Iraq may ultimately reach 2 trillion dollars. I do wonder if that much money couldn't have been spent in some better way that would have increased security, both for the U.S. and the world in general. Too bad our Congress underestimated the costs, and didn't even bother to discuss alternatives.

iwantFUEGO, no need to worry about a lot of nasty responses from here in the good old U.S., we prefer to keep the really nasty stuff amongst ourselves.

I don't buy the idea that invading Iraq was essential for a growing list of hindsight reasons, from stoping global terror to bringing peace and prosperity to the middle east. The anti-Bush in me says that matters of regional prosperity were pretty far down on the list of pre-war planning priorities. So, when it comes to policy, it's ALL POLITICS, regardless of party affiliation.

I've also seen brutally impoverished areas of the world, and many are a stones throw or small boat ride away from us. If the assumption that invasion/occupation leads to stabalization/prosperity then why isn't the U.S. pulling out the stops and invading the Sudan, for one?

Anyway, I was wondering how many people with a non-U.S. frame of reference typically respond to these threads... Peace!
