You're supposed to use your finger/finger nails to break up the bud into small pieces. Just try it and you'll be surprised how much weed you save.

If you take a small piece of bud and break it up in the bowl, it's actually bigger than when it was a full nugget. This way you can just use small amounts.
Also the burning is better. You don't burn the whole weed in just one hit but rather it keeps going and therefore you save weed.
So you save both amount, and amount of smoke left.
