Yeah, I actually did a 100+ page paper on the Thailand prostitution issue, for a Cultures of South East Asia class, prompted mainly by what I saw while I was there. We had gone to Patpong, Bangkok's red light district, just to check it out, it's one of those "got to see it" places when visiting Thailand. The girls are all very pretty, and quite tempting, but overall the place is quite depressing. It's even worse when you learn a bit more. These young village girls are lured to the big city, Bangkok, with hopes of a better life but basically become indentured servants. There are many villages in Northern Thailand which have literally been stripped of young women. At least those who aren't disfigured or otherwise considered undesirable. Combine that with the rampant spread of aids in the country and you have a completly desperate situation. And that's not even mentioning the underage child prostitutes. Truly very sad.
