Hey birdgirl, I've been to Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, and actually lived in China for a while so I've been all over it. Plus, since my wife's family is all in China we still go back about once a year. China's a great place to travel, there's tons to see and the people are very friendly. It can be a bit tough if you don't speak Chinese though, especially once you get out of the big cities since almost nobody speaks English there.

Despite my connections with China, I think my favorite place in Asia is Thailand. Something about it has such an incredible "exotic" feel to it. Hard to explain but I've heard the same thing from other people who've been there. The food there is so damn spicy though. I usually enjoy spicy food but even "mild" in Thailand will ment your tongue.

The key to eating in any of the places I've been is just to use common sense. I know a lot of people won't go to the street vendors but they have the tastiest stuff and you can fill your belly for pennies-literally! Most hot food is usually safe. I don't care how many festering salmonella bacteria are in something, once they've been in boiling oil they're harmless. The only time I ever got sick travelling in Asia was when I ate some cold food in a really nice, clean , Korean restuarant in Shanghai. I ended up in a Chinese hospital after that. That was nothi gcompared to the food poisoning I got from a Togo's sandwhich shop here in the U.S. though.

Thanks for the info, Fengzi! You just confirmed my every suspicion about Thailand being exotic and spicy and wonderful. I'd probably be knocked over by the peppery food, but I'm sure I'd have a similar reaction to the country itself.

You know two other places I want to go? Vietnam and Cambodia. They played such a big background role in the landscape of my childhood, what with the war on and both countries in the news day and night. It just seems like a place those of us who came of age in the 60s and 70s probably ought to see. I understand they're both spectacularly beautiful countries, and I already know I'd like the gentle, lovely people whose countries we helped wreak such havoc on. That same motivation to see a country that I remember hearing about in childhood was part of the attraction I felt toward India. It was where John, Paul, George and Ringo went, so by golly, I felt I needed to go check it out, too, even if it was 30 years later!
