The canopy of the plant will usually look healthier and luxuriant. a lot of growers prune to get more light to the undergrowth, or use light that is mounted on the sides of plants, so that light reaches them horizontally, or just harvest the ripe buds and allow light to reach the lower portions and let them bud

I have lights on the side...thats what I am worried about...they still seem to be dying.

But I think it will get better now because I transplanted them.
Yesterday whenI transplanted them the roots were bunched right up at the bottom, so hopefully they will have more room to grow out now.
