How tight should i poke down?

Hi all ive been getting trouble latley with my joints. I use the cone method.. as in making the cone first and putting the weed in. But i think ive been making them to loose or to tight, because when i light it sometimes it dosnent burn very well at all and sideburns quite abit. How tight/loose should i poke it down?

when im rolling a spliff, i spread the bud out evenly, and then do that with my fingers when im starting to roll it up. when its done and at the end i light wheres theres room for more bud, i poke down hard enough so that it makes a flat end then keep doign that after i add bud to it.

i try to compare it to the tightness of a cigarette. i know the weed bits isnt gonna be the same consistancy of the tobacco but its a start, then through trial and error you'll probably find which tightness will work.
