I don't know how common panic attacks are. I'm a very light smoker and have never experienced one after smoking weed. More often than panicking people, grass relaxes folks, but it can depend on the strain you have. If you're really worried about the possibility of panicking, make sure you get a good, hard workout in sometime within the hours before you smoke so you have that cool, calm, after-exercise "chill" going for you.

I think first-timers should expect to cough, especially if the weed isn't of high quality. If you're a cigarette smoker, the coughing won't be as much of a problem. And I didn't actually get high the first couple of times I tried it. Took some practice to wake up my cannabinoid receptors. I think, and I've heard this from others as well. That's all a long way of saying don't worry too much if you don't feel the effects real strongly the first time.
