They use a growing medium like perlite, gravel or rockwool (there are many more). They are put in a resivore of "working water" and nutes. You can make a cheap one for 10-30 dollors. You could use normal nutes with many trace elements or hydroponic nutes. If you want to try 1 more time then try hydroponics. Hydro can also improve you results by up to 75%. Make sure youre using the right nutes as well. High N, Low P and Med K for veg, Low N, High P and Med K for bloom. Your Light should be exactly 1 meter (over a yard) away from the tip of the plant.

Check this soil vs. Hydro test done by overgrow.com: http://www.overgrow.com/article/22
And check here to make a cheap bubbler bucket hydro system: http://www.overgrow.com/article/2
or look around online for one (nice full kits in ebay, just search "hydroponics").

    Post your succuess
Cheers bud, I might give that a try. Thanks for the info

There is no fan...Put a fan in there dude. A fan will stimulate the plant into creating a strong stem so it can support itself in its environment. Without a fan your plant will have a very hard time growing and most likely die from stress.

id have to say that the heat done your plant in. that lamp is too close. and use floros for your next grow, for the first 2-3 weeks then use the hps
and no nutes for at least 3 weeks, they dont need any.

and one more thing.............dont give up,, your not going to let a weed get the better of you, are you.

    Really good advice Giant!

    Don't give up, Johnny!
Those that know the most have failed the most!

You also might want to check the soil ph.

And go ahead and try to get at least 2 or 3 plants going to increase your odds and give you a way to compare what helps and what doesn't.

    Good luck!

    Good advice Giant.
Don,t worry about PH and fans etc.....
Your best bet is a flouresant , any will do but cool white is the boy.
It,s a weed and will grow easily without worrying too much about anything.
Use growbag soil for tomatoes and keep it just moist not wet with a flouresant a couple of inches away from the seedling, and keep the temp around 20-25oc and she,ll grow.
There is no point putting a 250 sodium on a seedling as due to very small leaves and very few of them they can,t photosynthasize very quickly , so keep it under a flouresant untill you got atleast 3 or 5 fingered leaves on it.

Ok, i've taken all your advice and Im ready to give it another go. In the last 24 hrs i've germinated and planted two more seeds, and Ive also kept the original as it does'nt seem to be doing so bad. Although I have'nt been able to get any of those floro's you talked about, I have raised my light and have also ordered a metal halide lamp for veg (more money wasted).

Got me wound up after reading your cheeky little post jollygreen.....I felt like growing fields of the shit.

Anyway i've enclosed a couple of pics, thanks for the advice people, i'll try and keep you updated.
