Picking a male is as important as picking the mother if you want quality.

I use the scratch and sniff test to find a good male. Beyond the required point the plant must look healthy, have good structure, node spacing and good color.

You can check about 2-3 weeks into flower for a hint into what the odor-flavor of that plant will be. Rub the stem above the wooded area where it is pliable but not new growth. You will find the chemical signature of the plant there. You can taste it with your tong on your fingers and give it a good smell too.

You should test more then once a day and make sure you donā??t smoke or eat before you test or that will affect the outcome. It takes about a week or more to find just the right male to make a good cross checking at different times in the day.
