when to switch??

i was just wondering what i should look for to know when to switch to a flower light cycle?
I am limited on space so the earliest i can switch i will so not to get them too big.
Also, does the sex show before or after you switch to 12/12?

ALSO- i read about people "trimming and pruning" to keep the buds growing... how do i do this?
