I'm 44. A liberal (or by some measures moderate) Democrat. And I'm that way because I read. I think. And I care. My parents are both college professors, so I think I'm also a product of the environment I was raised in.
I don't much enjoy arguing about politics because, like religion, it's not something people seem to feel on an intellectual level as much as they do an emotional one. But oh dear heaven, I hope and pray I never, ever grow more conservative as I get older because if I do, I'll know that it's some form of dementia or IQ degeneration setting in rather than a natural evolution to the conservative right. I confess that when I read the musings of Mr. Bong or some of the quotes you provided us, IamPatient, I attribute your views to those very maladies now.\"That best portion of a good man\'s life: his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love.\"

The definitions of liberal and conservative have changed. Since the meanings are skewed, the policies attributed to these factions must be re-examined.
Today's "liberals" are in favor of bigger government, and this used to be the opposite. On the other hand, the modern "conservatives" support less regulation and less government - a quality of the "old" liberal ideal in the now-distant past.
I know nothing about New Zealand's politics, but their Liberal Party seems to reflect the "old" values of their name.

Right, it seems the lines have been blurred and crossed here in the U.S. since the Reagan revolution. When the Reagan democrats jumped on the conservative train it required them to check their social liberal baggage.

Actually that's pretty close except the Republicans, and everyone else, were much more conservative in the 1850's than today.

Besides, we all know that if Jesus was running on the Republican ticket he'd win, hands down. Since he's Jesus, he could pick any running mate he wants and he could pick George Washington or Reagan. Who'd vote against Jesus, San Franciscans, some evil people, a few atheists, maybe?
That's the kind of Republican I am. I'm also anti-WOD, clearly.
