Today's "liberals" are in favor of bigger government, and this used to be the opposite. On the other hand, the modern "conservatives" support less regulation and less government - a quality of the "old" liberal ideal in the now-distant past.

I know nothing about New Zealand's politics, but their Liberal Party seems to reflect the "old" values of their name.

Right, it seems the lines have been blurred and crossed here in the U.S. since the Reagan revolution. When the Reagan democrats jumped on the conservative train it required them to check their social liberal baggage.

What happened to the republicans that once defended:

Pro Choice?
Gay Rights?
Fiscal Conservatism?
Less Government Control?
