If for some reason they are walking around with a drug dog and the dog is smelling people.. and there is no way you will be missed.. walk right up and try to pet the dog making like a "oh hes so cute" coment and the handler will tell you to back off and take the dog somewhere else (have your non carrying friend do that if available). They normally hate it when anyone even tries to touch the dog.

If you are going international or even to Hawaii the airports are equiped with agricultural scanners that pick up damn near anything food/plant related.. and if its in your luggage it will get caught.. I had them take a chocolate bar once.. and they were sooo mad about that stupid bar of choclate.. it was like a twix candy. Anyways.. if they start hassleing you but havent found anything ask to speak to their manager or whoever is in charge because you have a connection flight that you need to catch.. be calm and cool but be assertive and pressed for time.
