Eyeing Iran, Israel seeks cruise missiles
TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Israel has speeded up efforts to develop long-range cruise missiles of a type that could be used should the Jewish state try to strike at Iran's nuclear facilities, security sources said on Tuesday.
Israel sent warplanes to destroy Iraq's main atomic reactor at Osiraq in 1981 and has not ruled out similar action to prevent its arch-foe from getting the bomb should U.S.-led diplomatic pressure on Tehran fail.
The greater ranges to Iran's nuclear facilities might make cruise missiles more practical than planes, but the United States has rebuffed past Israeli requests to buy them.
Cruise missiles are programmed to seek out and hit distant targets, flying low to avoid radar. But only the United States and Russia are known to have mastered all aspects of production.
"A top priority has been put on developing this technology, in light of the Iran situation, as well as improving the Arrow," an Israeli security source said, referring to the anti-missile defence system designed by state-run Israel Aircraft Industries.

"The technological threshold is very close," Ehud Olmert said on CNN's "Late Edition" in an interview taped Thursday and broadcast Sunday.
"It can be measured by months rather than years."
Asked whether he believes Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would halt his nation's nuclear-enrichment program under international pressure, Olmert said, "I prefer to take the necessary measures to stop it, rather than to find out later that my indifference was so dangerous."

Psycho, do you think there will be a full scale war between Iran and Israel with the US on Israel's side? I'm not that much of a war guy myself, but it worries me. Ever since 9/11, these damn terrorists have threatened freedom in the name of promoting a twisted view of a religion. I just can't take it anymore myself!
I just want us all to be at peace and true value our differences.

Howdy Psycho4Bud,
Lmao
I like yer new avatar:thumbsup:
Thanx for the heads-up,I hadn't seen this report yet. I followed yer link to the rest of the story and read the rest of it. I think that Israel should go ahead and develope their own cruise missiles,as they should not count on support from a possible democrapper admin in '08.
We have sold the Israeli's,the F16i,a highly modified variant of the F-16,for a long range mission to cripple the Iranian nuclear facilities and the bunker-buster bombs to go along with them too. The Israeli's also have to prepare for the contingency of Syria jumping into the fray, upon hearing of an attack by Israel against Iran, cruise missiles would be very handy in backing off the Syrians.
Have a good one ! :stoned:

They always portray us to the world the same way as some on this site. We won't compromise, war mongers, etc...... By extending a hand and getting bitch slapped we more/less proved what we've been saying about the Iranian Government.
