When I first got to college, all I had to smoke out of for weeks was apple pipes. There are many ways to make them, here's mine:

get an apple (duh) and something you can poke a hole through an apple with. Cheap ballpoint pens (with the ink cartridge and ball point removed if you are worried about ink in your piece, I never bothered) work nicely.

Then:

1) Remove the stem from your apple.

2) Poke a hole from the top of the apple about halfway down.

3) Poke a hole from one side of the apple to the other. Make sure this hole hits your first hole, preferably right around the bottom of that hole.

4) (optional) Put some sort of screen on the top. I used to take small paperclips and fold them up as best I could - not as good as a mesh screen, but good enough to hold chunky buds. If you have something else that will work better as a screen, don't hesitate to get creative. I've heard of people using cut out pieces of soda cans with holes punched in them.

Now, you have an apple with three holes in it, all of which are connected. The top hole is your bowl. One of the side holes is where you take your hit, and the other serves as a carb.

There are other variants (the carb isn't strictly necessary, for example, so you can make the hole through only one side instead if you prefer), but this is what I used to blaze when I didn't have a piece or papers. I recommend investing in at least a cheap piece or maybe a bat/pinch hit... You should be able to find something pretty decent for under $20 (sometimes under $10, depends on what kind of piece and how good the headshops near you are), and having a permanent piece is definitely A Good Thingā?¢.
