It's formed from resin glands, correctly called trichomes (the glands that make the cannabis plant look crystally) which people either rub their hands on the plants (mostly the bud and leaves that has the shit on it) and they have hash or they use a method called "Sieving" from already harvested buds and they shake the device until all the shit fals below the siev while unwanted plant material lays on top.

its all the crystally goodness of weed made into a block of goo, weed can be like 5-30% thc (guestimate) and hash is usually around 60% thc so you get more stuff to get you high in a gram of hash than a gram of weed

If you want, you can make your own hash. Buy a grinder with a keef catcher, and when you have your ass a good deal of keef, you can press it using a pollen presser, or you can do it yourself using pieces of plastic, someone has a guide about making it with the plastic that cigarettes come in.

By the way, don't be scared to ask a question. Well, unless it's about trying to smoke weed out of a crackpipe or trying to shove weed up your ass. Then you might be met with some "harsh" criticism.
