After win, Nagin vows to speed New Orleans cleanup
NEW ORLEANS, May 21 (Reuters) - Ray Nagin pledged on Sunday to spend the first 100 days of his second term as mayor of hurricane-ravaged New Orleans finding ways to speed up rebuilding, solve its housing crisis and clean up debris.
Less than a day after narrowly defeating Mitch Landrieu, a relaxed-looking Nagin also said he would work to improve strained relations with officials, notably Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco, and his own city council to accelerate the plodding recovery.
RESTORING CREDIBILITY
After Katrina devastated 80 percent of the city on Aug. 29, the mayor made world headlines for his impassioned pleas for assistance from Washington. But he was criticized for his own initial response to the disaster, and many analysts wrote off his re-election chances.

However, more and more constitutional intrusions are being lawed into existence, ie, if you are a PASSENGER in a car and the passenger is drinking a beer, etc. Illegal. Illegal to sell some video games to minors now. Smoking with a child under 4'9'' in the car. Illegal. All these came in the last month.
The police, since we are still under emergency order, have become even more fascistic.
As for the city as whole, miles and miles and miles of dead houses.
But, yes, the quarter survived. Hell, there were a couple of places that NEVER CLOSED.
I never in my life thought I would leave this city. I can no longer say that.
How this city could re-elect one of the main people in it's demize would be completely beyond me, except, that it is a political black stronghold. The Kleptocrats could not allow that to change. If you count the votes, you win. What were the incumbents doing prior to the flood? Making laws to fine those that put out garbage before 4pm in the afternoon. The levee board was too busy raking in money from casinoes to be concerned about the levees.
So goes the Kleptocracy (Stolen Plutocracy).
My Best to You and Yours,
Ed

Salaries are at an all time high. Many if not MOST of the business in Orleans and even Jefferson parish can not find enough people to maintain normal business hours. Most are on minimalized hours. Burger king, most of the food outlets are giving bonuses as much as 500 a month for an employee.

Back to your comments about Ray Nagin: your there, what piece of the puzzle failed during Katrina in your view? Some put it all on the Fed and others put more of the blame on the state and local government.
You lived it, who better to ask.
Have a good one!

What part of the system worked. NONE. 50k in superdome, no water, no toilets, no way out. About another 25k on overpasses. I was taken out of my house at gunpoint. No way I was going to the dome. 3 airboats, 12 to 15 FEMA bountyhunter type deputies. Took em about 45 minutes. But, they got me. The water had just cleared my floor. 11 days on the roof to try and save the little left. They took me out when I was finally able to save stuff. Had built a little 6x6 shack up there. Shade, no mosquitoes (screen), fresh fruit from my banana trees, marines dropped me water and food on the 2nd day. Coast guard big pain in the butt. Marines rulez.

The feds came in through the 82 airborne. And broke open EVERY HOUSE. The looting, predominately by the influx of house gutters was rampant. Everything was wide open.
Prior to the hurricaine it was business as usual, line those pockets, while ignoring reponsibilities.
