Legalization is key but won't stop lock out from employment opportunities
While I strongly advocate for legalization and think that we should all be contributing to the effort in a proactive way (writing letters to our representatives, etc), I am presently as concerned about drug testing which impacts my standard of living by locking me out of many opportunities.
Unfortunately, legalization will not stop the onslaught of private companies who perform drug testing. The usual response is to quit the smoking lifestyle, as we age, in exchange for lucrative employment.
After many years of swirming around the system (I worked as government administration and was rarely tested while my staff were subject to random) I have decided to remove myself (despite the initial pain of living with less) from "public service" to start a business of my own.
What can we do? Share information about companies that respect our civil liberties and do not perform drug test. In my opinion drug testing (searching my bodily fluids without reasonable cause) is a disgusting practice which no one should tolerate, smoker or not.
NORML, used to post a list by state of such companies, does anyone know if they still do? Last time there couldn't find it.Ms.W Reviewed by Ms.W on .
