    Outdoor dirt from ground

What are the reasons for not using dug up dirt from your yard on your plant when planting it. I know that soil is way better to use, but would like to know what would happen if I didn't and just planted it in the ground itself.

The quality of most topsoil isn't very good. When you buy soil, it has ammendments that assist in holding moisture while still aerating the roots. Often times there compost added, too. So in other words, you know you're getting decent soil if you buy it, you don't have any idea if you just dig it up.

I say just try to find a cheap good potting soil mix. The dirt from the back yard wont give you the best results of the plant and from past experience it usually brings pests, bugs ect.

buy cheap, grow cheap ... cheap potting soil may not have been properly sterilized, you could be buying microbes, funguses, insect eggs ... not a place to save a few cents ... I paid $8 for a 2-cubic foot bag of premium potting soil ... I could have saved $2 by buying the cheap crap, but ......... :smokin:
