Eh, Congress voted, and both the left and the right wanted us to invade Afghanistan and Iraq.
The right justified it like: "Well, we need to kick some ass so we don't appear weak. Plus, we'll get access to more oil, and this'll be really good for big business when we start rebuilding."
The left justified it like: "We'll free the oppressed from their tyrants, and that's always good, then they'll form a utopian democracy and life will be roses. Plus, Bush says they have WMDs and/or were involved with 9/11, so okay, let's blow the fuckers up."
The left were pretty much wrong on their reasons, but the right, they didn't do so bad. The wars HAVE been good for big business, at least the businesses getting the big rebuilding contracts like Haliburton. And a side effect of it all appears to be enormous, record windfall profits for big oil. I'm not saying that Bush and Cheney's involvement in the oil business necessarily had anything to do with anything, but I can't definitely say it was complete coincidence either.
It does appear that we chose to spend what some studies say may ultimately be two trillion dollars in total net cost on these two countries, neither of which posed us much threat, but we chose to ignore North Korea until they definitely DID gain access to nuclear weapons, and we aren't doing much about Iran at the moment while they're pursuing nuclear weapons. Sometimes war is actually necessary, but sheesh, we should do a better job picking the targets, because we were totally wrong on the two we picked.
