when i hit my pipe the glass can get really really hot, and it does make it weaker but if you boil your pipe u need to make sure its suspended in the boiling water somehow. otherwise it will probably crack from being bounced around by the boiling water bubbles.

but boiling it probably doesnt get it as hot as if you were smoking out of it.
i dont know if boiling it will weaken the glass, but boiling water is just as hot if not hotter than a lighter, and it would be all around and inside the pipe for a sustained period of time. basically im just saying you cant really compare boiling it and smoking out of it.
