Swamp coolers/evaporative cooling VS. portable air conditioners

Hey guys. Its getting hotter out now, and My temps are reaching near 90F

I rent, so cant put big air conditioner in room. But I saw these $300 portable air conditioners. I know that would work wonders But price...


Then I saw these Swamp coolers. They say they will cool a room down from 80F to 65F. But They push out 100 percent humidity unlike portable air conditioners.

My question is, has anyone used a swamp cooler? And if so, will getting a Dehimidifyer solve the problem?

Whats better.

Expensive air conditioner with no humidity. But it might draw attention to my window cause it must exaust.

Either way really. Basicly if the swamp cooler makes your room more then 50% humidity ,you should use a dehumidifier.
The ac in the window has invisible exhaust. And it isn't wierd.They are everywhere. I am about to install one in my window.
If I was you I'd use the window ac.It's just easier. And MJ needs a dry climate.Just make sure you get alot of btu's. Like 10,000 in a normal size room. Like 15 square feet. Mine is 8,000 I think. But I have a cooled hood (that would help alot) (But they need holes in the wall,so.)I also have an exhaust fan. But the ac in the window should work fine.

in my part of the country, swamp coolers are used the most. they won't raise the humidity in your house, depending on what the normal humidity is. here, its less than ten percent. if you live in an area that the humidity is above fifty percent, all they will do is move air. swamp coolers are run on a positive pressure system. this means that if you put it in your window, its going to blow a shitload of air, and that air needs to go somewhere. ie, in a typical house, you would leave some of the windows cracked slightly. you can figure for every thousand watts of light, there is a heat affect of about 3500btu's. therefore you need the equal amount or slightly more to maintain the temp in the room. if it was me, i would go purchase a window ac unit that is somewhere in the neighborhood of ten to twelve thousand btu's. you can simply plug it in and let it go. swamps work very well in a very dry climate, but not anywhere where theres humidity. oh, if your running a co2 burner, you will need to upsize the ac unit. oh, the stand alone ac units that you place in a room, do not work very well. stick with the window units.

Just put better fans in, so your taking away the hot air.

But yeah, a air conditioner is ok, but make sure you keep track of humidity.

An exhaust fan is not enough for the real warm areas.
That would help, but an ac unit is still nessisary to properly control the environment. I got one for $350 (8,000 or 10,000 I can't remember)and it has a timer and all types of shit on it. To control the environment.
The exhaust is more for humidity. But I live were the humidity is around 25%. And the swamp cooler in the house works ok. To help with the temps too.Not too humid here.

I think im gonna go for the portable air conditioner.

I already have much air movement and fans, but my ambient room temp is over 85 so my passive air hood cooling can only bring temp down so much. I already have a squirlcage etc. and a cooling humidifyer, and another fan in the room. But still temps are tooo high. And its not even dead heat of summer.

Im Gonna get this puppy. If I painted it black, stuck a head ontop, Wouldnt it look like that star trek cripled guy who could only press two buttons.. one for yes one no. From OLD original star trek. :} LOL :}

Im not paying as much as listed so its not too bad. gonna get if for about $270. Im gonna go portable cause I rent and dont wanna really ask to install a large 10,000btu air conditoner. This portable has a Much smaller window exaust and i can vent to another room if i choose.

Plus I can wheel it right into the closet :} And for that price, its about same as a large window unit.

Interesting old thread. I was wondering about heat issues in my room as well. I'm on a tight budget (around $200). Humidity in the summer around here is between 10% and 30% and the temperature is between 85 and 105 most days. It's cooler in the mornings (around 60-70) but with slightly higher humidity(35-50%)

I'm thinking that a swamp cooler would work best since it doesn't use very much power, and I don't have and windows to mount an AC unit. I have a good filtration system which I believe should limit the effects of the swamp cooler raising humidity. I've also got a dehumidifier just in case.

Anyone have any experiences with swamp coolers inside grow rooms in a dry climate?
