Bong Making: How do you work with glass?

It's my ambition to make a bong out of a small/medium size glass root beer bottle. Not a a shitty temporary one, one i can hopefully keep for a while. I pretty much know what im doing for the bowl and the stem but I dont know how to make a neat hole in the glass without cracking or shattering it. A family member I live with has a wide array of tools, but its not something i feel like asking them about, haha. Any suggestions?

You can buy a glass drill bit from like Home Depot or Wallmart for only like a dollar or two. It will work with nearly all drills. Work slow.

i did that once, it kinda worked. well it worked the 4th try. lemme start off by saying u need a lot of patience. i sat on my carpeted floor and sat 'butterfly style' and held the bottle (opening pointing away from me) in between my feet (with some shoes on ofcourse) then i took a screwdriver bit and held it on the glass with some plyers. i then proceeded to hit the metal bit with a hammer numerous times, taking breaks to dip the bit in oil and water. remember do NOT hit the bit too hard, the bottle WILL shatter. also once u have a small hole or even a deep chip u can then take a sharp knife and twist it around in the hole to widen it. when u 'widen' it u will be chipping away at it. and dont get discouraged if the bottle shatters, it took me 4 tries, but it was worth it =D any questions boys n girls?

lol they call it a drill bit because you use it to drill a hole, not chip a hole like you would with a chisel, damn pink what the fuck are you on? (i can just see u sitting there iwth a hammer and drill bit getting all frustrated because the bottle keeps breaking)

A Dremmel Rotary Tool should do the trick. It will cut a nice, neat hole for you.

hahah swear im not a methhead =P nah i was bored as hell and very determined and the first one just broke so i thought id try again and the second one cracked a lil and i wanted to see if i could actually get it without cracking the bottle. so then i got it on the third try. it really didnt take that long only like 10min, 15 tops. hah yeah kapps, i put a nice glass slide in there and it hits great!

ive actually been using a drill bit to try and scrape a crator in it, ive gotten a good way through, but its tedious, so i might have to try hammering it. thanks.

a dremel rotory tool and hot glue gun will do many amazing things.
1st get a good thick glass bottle preferably a old coke bottle
2. clean and dry it out
3.aprox. half way down the side take dremel with a diamond edged tile cutting bit and drill a small hole through the side
4. now take the bit and slowly ream the hole out to a prox 3/8 of an inch
5 go to oposite side and do the same .but make the ho;e abot a 1/4 inch for your carb..
6.get some surgical tubing [ aval at home depot /lowes] and a rubber gasket that the tubing fits snugly through.
7 place gasket with tubing threaded through it in the 3/8 inch hole
8.for the bowl you can purchase clear plastic tubeing to reach below the desired water line you will need a gasket for the upper tube as well you can then either make a wood bowl to slide on & off the tube or get a metal bowl to attach or if you want to spend the $ buy a slider from a head shop .
always wear safety glasses and gloves when drilling glass a hole in the hand is no biggy but a shard of hot glass in the eye is not as easily fixed good luck and let us know how it turns out
