Iran's president banned from World Cup games?

BERLIN, May 6 (UPI) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel is being pressed to keep the president of Iran from attending any World Cup games.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a soccer fan, has not said whether he plans to travel to Nuremburg to watch Iran play Mexico on June 11. If he does, it could be embarrassing for Germany, given his views on Israel -- which he called a "tumor" -- and his statements on the Holocaust.

As a head of state with diplomatic immunity, Ahmadinejad could not be charged under German laws that make Holocaust denial a crime. But German politicians hope he can be quietly convinced to stay away, the Times of London reported.

One Christian Democrat politician suggested that soccer's governing body, FIFA, should declare top Iranian leaders persona non grata. The newspaper Rheinische Post said France, Germany and Britain could ask the European Union to impose a travel ban.

"That would be an elegant solution for our problem, because we could then deny Ahmadinejad entry," a German official said.
