Look into things on pruning and stuff, cause like king said you can trim it and cause the plant to grow out more than up.

I am a newbie and researched this and had great success....

Leaf pruning exposes the interior of the plant to more light and promotes growth at or opposite the point where the vegetation is cut. To much stunts the growth and lowers the yield so be careful. Remove one leaf (always at mid stem) at the second or third node. Wait until the next set of leaves opens and remove another leaf. Do this four times, pruning each successive leaf in a continuous direction creating a spiral staircase effect. Lateral growth is promoted and can be trained out creating a bushy plant.
Top plants at the fifth or sixth node, allow a full set of leaves to grow and then top as the next set begins to open. You can achieve extra shoots up to five or six by cutting and leaving the top intact leaving about 10 to 15% of the vegetation (carefully cut but not all the way through) again make this cut just below mid stem rather than just above the node. The top will wilt and eventually need to be removed, use your judgement when to do this, serious plants can repair this injury and continue to grow make sure the cut does not heal by bending the tip over occasionally.
Supercropping is another technique where you actually break the inner hurd of the branch without damaging the outer skin. Growth is temporarily stunted on the outside while inside an improved network of energy and nutrient transfer developes. This process slows the growth keeping internodal spacing to a minimum and huge gains in yield can be achieved, especially if started when plants are young (stems must be a little firm) all the way up to flowering. Using thumb and forefinger of both hands, grasp the branch a half an inch above and below the spot to be treated. CAREFULLY and Slowly twist in opposite directions until you feel and hear a snap. When you are new to this it is very awkward but you will learn and the process will become quick, also the more you do this the easier the snap comes. Repeat this treatment every two inches on every branch to the top weekly, treating a different spot each time. If you happen to damage or break a stem use tape it will heal, if you rip the whole thing off you've gone to far. Slowly. All this extra time you spend with your plants exhaling CO2 it's a good thing.
When your plants are short and bushy they use more available light and all the shoots receive the same amount, yellowing and dieing off of older growth is kept to a minimum.
