weed is just plain better when being filtered - even in a joint the smoke is filtered through the joint itself - hence the potency of roaches. In a pipe its just direct injection and although it gets me goofed pretty quickly its just too harsh for me - maybe if theres a pipe with some sort of filter in it? But by the time you get that right you might as well buy a bong anyway.
