Smoke is just very fine particulate. As the smoke passes through the water, some of it goes into solution with the water.
New here is the interesting part: Although THC is not very water soluble, neither is oil and resin and other smoke combustion byproducts. In fact, these are less soluble than THC. When you pass the smoke through the water, you lose more THC than you do contaminants, and so end up with a worse THC to contaminant ratio than by simply inhaling the smoke directly.
The result is that to consume an identical amount of THC, you have to inhale a LARGER amount of contaminant.

Ok, so my uncle, who I have the most respect for in the world, is a very heavy smoker, probably goes through 1/8 a day or more, and is almost always an "intellectual" high. He talks about philosophy and religion a lot, and I've probably seen him totally sober about 5 times my entire life. His weapon of choice is a little brass pipe w/ a screw-on top to cover the bowl for transport. He's a very efficient smoker, and never lets extra weed burn after his hits.
