so i was looking online at home depot's lights and i saw that they had hps lights. they said they were for security lights and accent lights... i was wondering if there is any difference between ones they sell and one i would find at a hydro store. this would be a lot more convenient bc there isn't a hydro store within at least an hour of me.

also, i saw in "i grow chronic" mr green used tube fluoros, and i was wondering what wattage of tube fluoros/lumens you would need to get like 6 babies going or so for veg? he rode them all the way through the process too, not just for seedling stage.

The HPS security light at the home depot, whether it's 150w or 200w (do they come in 250?), is the same that you would get from any hydro retailer or any do-it-yourself kits.

I know 150 watts and below you have to put the kits together yourself unless you can get it at home depot (with few exceptions). 200, I think is the same also.

So really, its more about what wattage you want to use than anything else. So if you want less than 250, then see if you can find that wattage in the security lights, or you have to get a do-it-yourself kit.

If you know of a hydro store that sells the full 150w ballast & bulb (that's not in a kit), then please tell me...but I havent EVER seen one.

If they come in 250w, and that's what you're looking for, then you need to compare the difference in price along with if the security light has a good reflector....If I had to outright choose based on quality, I'd definately go with a 250w meant for plants as opposed to the security light. The differences are probably very negligible so if it's a $100 difference for the same wattage, I would probably go with what's cheaper (security lights).

thanks for the reply. i think i am going to be heading over to hd here soon. it has been a busy week and i got a busy week here ahead with little time; and, i want to make sure it is worth my trip, not the most enjoyable ride. thanks. the best way to know is to take a look up close but i have neglected to do so yet. (my fault, i know)

any thoughts on the tube fluoros? for those of you who haven't seen the video. he used the fluoros all the way through veg, not flower (of course).

They sell bulbs up to 400w but they only sell complete lights up to 70w and that will not help you at all. It will produce more heat then lumens.

I could swear I bought this 150watt HPS system from Home Depot, and I can hold the whole thing in my hands while it's been on -- ballast, bulb, igniter, wires.. basically the entire system in an aluminum housing that I can keep below eighty degrees with ease.

Yes, it does produce a lot of heat with no fan.

But it's nothing that can't be taken care of.

any thoughts on the tube fluoros? for those of you who haven't seen the video. he used the fluoros all the way through veg, not flower (of course).

There are many grows here that are done start to finish with cfl so sure. Look for a post by BobBong on CFL. Latewood has many posts where he has worked with CFL as well.

i actually am doing my first ever right now with cfl's and it is going surprisingly well. i was just interested in the advantages of the possibility of using tube fluoros like i saw in "i grow chronic." after this first session is done i plan on doin it all a little less broke ass and little more appropriate. because we all know that every lady deserves proper treatment and far be it for me to be the rude man rather than a gentleman.
