It's very sexually charged but the most important part of the movie is that Lee has just been released from a mental institution because she cuts herself...which leads her into the whole relationship with her boss. Anyway, I think it has something to do with being in control of your life and enjoying the pain of cutting...some ppl get a high feeling from physical pain.
its simply a physical expression of self hatred. some are secret some not but if someone is open about it it could be a few reasons- fake, to get attention- or they acknowledge its a problem and want help. The point is that if someone is cutting themselves its probably not to get a buzz but a release from intensly bad emotions. I am doing a degree in psychology and have friends at uni with mental heath problems. Anyone cutting themselfs to get attention in a direct and obvious way either has really big problems or is faking "adolecent angst" type shit to be cool ( I hve seen this and it really is sickening). self harm is a release like smoking a fag and speaking from experience comes from very low self esteem.
I'll point out that i have used magic mushrooms to alter my self perception and since then i havent been feeling depressed (not clinical).
Understanding has helped me help myself, but ignorance of mental illness hardly helps those in psychotic (not hannibal lecter) states. I am lucky in that i am able to see beyond my current mood, but some people are not. so to simplify their problems in a black and white way wont help anyone. Life is complex
