Actually, that's not true. People have known since the ancient Greeks that the earth was round. Eratosthenes even calculated the size of the earth with only a 2% error. As for the few people who did think the earth was flat, it was only because the evidence was hard for them to see. But I think anybody who's seen a volcano will conclude that it the lava had to come from some really hot place deep below the ground.
