And it did collapse before we could actually get out of the building, so we were trapped in the building for 10, 15 minutes, and finally found an exit and got out, walked north, and took a lot of people with us.â? Perhaps Iâ??ve said this many times, but it bears repeating. While leaving lower Manhattan on the subway, on the morning of 9/11/01, I was told by another straphanger, who happened to be an architect, that these buildings were designed to, and would, collapse straight down if struck by a large aircraft, or faced with a similar emergency. This is exactly what happened when I arrived home and turned on the TV. The government, and the airlines, should have had the cabin doors extremely protected and locked on all flights, as does El Al Airwas. This, to me, was the biggest mistake, of all. Flights should never be diverted due to hijackers' threats. Israel has not had a successful hijacking since their planes have been equipped with better doors on the cockpits - which are always locked. They have had other security measures in place for years, including proiling. It works.



Unfriendly skies are no match for El Al
