I found the the Mormons' site very helpful, and they have Family History Centers everywhere - they are experts at doing it. They are also called "LDS", for Latter Day Saints. They won't push the religion on you - and charge a small fee to recall microfilm from Utah, which has their headquarters.

http://www.familysearch.org/

There is also ancestry.com, genealogy.com, and the enormous Rootsweb.com

They have message boards for family names, such as "Jones Family Genealogy Forum", etc.

I found my revolutionary war soldier ancestors, Mayflower passengers, and many from the Colonial Period - including many New England, and Martha's Vineyard, ancestors. You can spend a LIFETIME doing this.

I became eligible for, and joind, several organizations for descendants of pilgrims, revolutionary war solders, and am also eligible for a number of others.

For more recent ancestors, you can try the Ellis Island website, Castle Island, and ships' manifests.

If you think that you have ancestors that were Masons, there are probably records. I do (have Mason ancestors), but I have not researched it yet.

Good luck!
