    IS THIS HAZARDOUS?

Hi all just outta intrest would a 400w hps lamp with ballast be ok to run in a cupboard about 2 1/2foot x 2 1/2foot square and about 10foot high? or would it just cause too much heat? and be a fire hazard?

run a "cool-tube" or otherwise fans with good ventilation ... and hope the fan doesn't take a dump when nobody's home ..... go here:

i doesn't really matter if it will be a fire hazard because it will be way to hot, without good ventillation, to grow anything anyway.

That would be alot of heat. If you had the ballast on the outside of the box and ran wires into it that would help to reduce your heat and I believe would remove the "fire hazard" risk.

Get a small fan and mount it on one side of the box like an exhaust fan on the topside of one side and bore out a nice size hole on the other lower side. That would definately help!

    Good luck with the grow!

That's how I did my first grow. Money was tight so I went with the flo's during veg cycle and lucky enough was able to afford a HPS when I hit flowering. If you go with the flo's just stay away from the daylighter lamps...it's recommended to use a combo of soft white and cool white.

    Good luck with the grow!

Like they said heat is an issue with HPS so just switch to CFL until you get some more money to install the HPS light and are ready to deal with the heat they generate.
