DFW...drinks?
Hey, fellow Texans. Just introducing myself here real quick. I am brandie new to the area and know no one except a few people that I work with. I actually live in the Irving area and so far have gotten around to Sanger, Denton, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Grapevine. The misses and I are looking for somewhere to build a house.
Anywho, if anyone wants to hook-up for drinks or something, hit me on hushmail (bigcalhoun). If you're a gin drinker, that's a plus! I'm a Tanqueray 10 and tonic guy. If you're into spoken word and don't mind travelling to the ghetto, also hit me up. Found an excellent place in Dallas called Sankofa that has open mic on Saturdays. A LOT of talent and nice vibe. I have a feeling I'll be a regular there!
Oh, and if you need a BBQ caterer; I went to a house warming party over the weekend and had the BEST ribs since I've been down here. Very nice cook, older gent whose alot of fun and I want to see him do well cause he treated me right and we had a blast!

Nice ta meet ya!
'Spoken Word' is something like that...I guess a modern day version of it. But yes, gettin up on stage and speaking poetry/prose. But it's 'Open Mic' so they also have people come up and sing, a couple of people played some instruments last week (Keyboards and clarinet). It was my first time at this particular place and it was great.
I hear ya about the barfights...hence why I just hang out at restuarant bars. A little 'stuffy' as far as the people go but usually pretty tame. Although Friday nights @ The Keg can get interesting. I'll have to look up that Salty Dog, never heard of that one.
See ya around!!...I said my piece, so now, I hush.

Welcome Big Calhoun,
You're the first person I've seen mention spoken word, I've become a fan of the spoken word when I heard Dasan Ahanu on NPR. It's some powerful prose. It would be great to experience it first hand, I just don't get into Dallas tho. There's a drum circle too in Dallas that I'd like to attend, but their hours are from 10pm till the wee hours of the morning...kinda past my curfewLOL.

Hey, nice to meet you too!
Now by curfew, you mean married or underage? Which either, I can understand. Luckily the misses is pretty lax so long as I tell her 'about' what time I'll be back, LOL!
I used to go to spoken word events in NYC while I lived in New Jersey. I was at a networking mixer last week and someone happened to mention it so I decided to check it out and was glad I did. It was some good stuff. Alot of positive messages that IMO, more people need to hear, of every race and class. I liked thier new wave twist to it. Back in the day (before my time, beatniks as Torog said) the audience would snap their fingers when they heard something they like. At this place, you hold open your cellphone and 'give them the light' when you like what you hear. Very cool...great food too! I think that's what I enjoyed, it was a complete night.....got there around 9 and had a couple of drinks, grabbed a table and had a salad with some friend chicken bites, then had a smoothy later on. All while listening to a great house band and some powerful words.
But hey, if you get out this way, look me up. I'm still trying to meet people although everyone I've come across so far has been pretty friendly. Being gone from the South for so long, trying to get back to my roots....I said my piece, so now, I hush.

Just give me a holler when you got a free sat. night. I'll be going the next few weekends, including this weekend. Shoot a note to bigcalhoun at hushmail.com and we can work the logistics. I'm over in Irving...still learning what's N Dallas vs S Dallas VS East VS West.
Nice to meet ya!!...I said my piece, so now, I hush.
