Meditation is the ongoing practice of focusing your mind/body/soul. If you arent a spiritual person i would suggest yoga. Same principals but it steers away from the spiritual aspects of meditation. Its something you have to take up as a habit and take the time to practice. It requires a deal of patience and most importantly a quiet place to practice. Like most things in life you get what you put into it. You really do benefit from it and you will be a better person for it.
