It's just a sign of repsect and compasion for people in need.

Whether you pray to a god, or not, praying can be as simple as being grateful for what you have and remembering those who've lost so much. My thoughts are with the people in TN. Best wishes to everyone.
You want to remember those who have lost so much? Then think about the fact that a child dies of starvation somewhere in the world every 5 seconds. Or the fact that 350 people die of AIDS every hour. Why are the people in Tennessee in your thoughts but not the Africans who have it much much worse than they do? Personally, I don't like to waste my time worrying about the hardships of people I don't know and will never meet. Sure, I could spend my whole day reading about and mourning over the miserable lives of complete strangers, but I have a life of my own and I'd like to enjoy it while I still have it.
