THC is not water soluble, which means it will not disolve in to water easily (which includes blood), if at all. So in order for it to get in to the bloodstream (mostly water), and eventually the brain (where cannabinoid receptors lie waiting), it must be disolved into something that will eventually enter the bloodstream. Good candidates include butter, oil, etc that undergo lipolysis to form lipoproteins and such, which can carry water insoluble molecules (THC) in water (blood) - to your brain. So you have THC (bud) and Lipids/Fats (butter), now what? Now the THC must be heated (catalyzed) to cause it to disolve out in to the fatty substance at a higher rate. The hotter you heat it, the more THC released (but not too hot, or you will break the molecular bonds that hold THC together). That is why baking works well - medium heat for a respectable time period, especially if you already made cannabutter. I'm pretty baked myself right now. Science is fun...
