Who's job is it, at an airport, to notice a crack in the windshield?

Ha, this all reminded me of one time I was in China and flew on a Chinese airline. I was in the window seat and when I looked up I saw that the plastic trim around the window was held on with duct tape. Sure it was just the trim and had no structural value but it made me wonder what else was duct taped together.

that's when you press the call button and say...
"please pull the plane over, i would like to get off, i heard they had a mass-recall on duct tape"

Most definitely did so with marijuana. Leaving Vancouver, returning to school with a friend after we had spent a week there. Got on the plane after having smoked for 4 straight hours (in a smoke bar) and having been high all week. I don't even remember packing, but maybe we had packed the night before.

In any case, it was AMAZING, although there were certainly several times when I was convinced that we'd get caught (the inherent pot-paranoia) because I was equally sure that everybody in the airport knew how high we were. It was a relatively short flight...we most definitely stayed baked the whole time, and had a ball talking about utter nonsense.

Not sure if I would've done the same without my friend there, though...if alone, probably just would've smoked enough to get semi-high, just to make the travel a little easier (as much as I fly, I hate it...we've become cattle!).

Something like a crack in the windsheild must be pretty rare so they may get the full going over once every 500hrs of flying time or something like that. Just hope your not on the plane on the 499th hr

Just because I'm a nerd, I want to note that the chances of failure are equal for every period dx. So, there is an equal chance that there is a crack immediately after they check for one and immediately before.

The reason why checking still works, though, is actually because of chance...we're chancing that it's something like 1/1000 flight hours, so if we check every 500hrs we have a reasonable chance of catching a crack in action.

It IS the captain's responsibility to notice such things. When the plane lands, he has to walk around the aircraft and check everything.

And besides, a crack should be easy to notice. Primarily because it is straight ahead of you, and also flight deck windows are tiny.

They could even have hit a bird on take-off. But anyway it wouldn't cause any problems until you reach cruising speed and altitude, where the crack could enlarge, resulting in the window shattering causing the plane to depressurise sucking the pilots out!

I don't understand why people are so scared of flying. It is so easy. I have flown real planes, PC simulations and full size simulators.
