If a man does anything pleasurable three times a day for three months he's probably going to find it difficult to stop. Of course he'll have withdrawals but likely less tolerance and thus less severe withdrawals than a 99 year old addicts. Note that a person addicted to opium or pharmaceutical grade heroin could live the rest of their lives that way. Society doesn't allow use of opioids as a legal commodity, but of course they are still available on the blackmarket.
Unfortunately heroin is twice as addictive as morphine which comprises about 20% of opium. Not many underground organizations are going to import opium. Instead they use the raw opium, purify it and convert it into a more active product which is then redistributed, cut and purchased by a user who has no idea what it contains at a high price.
