What causes color change?
Well, whatever it is, it's not good.
Pine, wood shavings are not good to use, since it uses available nitrogen to decompose. Put pumice or perlite at bottom. I prefer pumice since it doesn't blow away. I put pumice at the bottom of all my containers with no holes.
You need to feed your plants. My preference would be organics. Liquid kelp or fish emulsion. I've seen great grows with just fish emulsion. The seedlings only have about two weeks of food stored in them.
