yes but look into buying a HPS light and a MH conversion. You will get more lumens to the plant to flower. The MH to HPS conversion bulbs are cheaper from what I remember.

A 600watt HPS on it own... will be better than any 400watt conversion bulb...

But it will generate a bit more heat..

Just thought I'd throw that out for you as an option..

yes.. but the difference between a 600watt bulb and a watt BULB are HUGE..
the plant really really takes it to the next level.....

either way,. you need to keep the light as close as possible...
less than 10 inches.. if you want to get PROfessional results

garden thanks dude, but we are just gonna go with a 400w cause we dont have the extra 100$ for the 600w. but would it be better to buy a 400w hps grow light system and a 400w mh bulb conversion or a 400w mh grow light system and a 360w hps conversion bulb? i've look and noticed that the lumens are lower for the conversion bulbs as apposed to the bulbs that come with the grow light systems...

Lumens don't matter bluecraze08. The spectrum of light that the bulb gets it's lumen rating is the spectrum that plants are least sensitive to.

I'm going to use this: http://www.specialty-lights.com/901154.html with the eye hotilux blue bulb. I am going to grow with this because it will allow the plants to grow almost right to the bulb and this bulb has the best spectrum I could find. I may supplement with an Argosun red or gold during flowering.

Is that the system your using? I don't know what to tell you about the conversion bulbs, I don't know much about them.

You have to buy a 400 watt MH light? Then why not do even better and buy a 400Watt switchable ballast then you can run a 400w MH for veg and HPS bulb for flowering.
Check ebay I bought a 400w MH/HPS switchable ballast(Sun System) 1 MH bulb, 1 HPS bulb, Sun Reflector(Bat Wing),1 Roll of mylar 100ft and the Mogul socket all for 309.00USD shipped.
